Assignments abroad are SES’s oldest field of activity. Its history began in 1983 with the first assignment in an agricultural co-operative in Brazil. Since then, the number of SES assignments abroad has risen to over 37,000 and the number of countries of assignment to 170
The range of applications for Experts has also broadened: today, they support small and medium-sized enterprises, public administrations, chambers and trade associations, social and medical organisations and basic and vocational training institutions.
They help with the installation, maintenance and operation of machines in the skilled trades and in production, with the training of skilled workers, with questions relating to marketing and sales, organisation, human resources or certification and in many other areas.

SES is the largest German voluntary organisation for specialists and managers who are retired or taking a career break (Weltdienst 30+). SES has been supporting the transfer of expertise in development cooperation since 1983. In Germany, it is primarily committed to supporting young people in schools and training programmes.
